Jane Mendillo - Harvard Endowment CEO

The Harvard Management Co (http://www.hmc.harvard.edu/), which manages Harvard's $35 billion Endowment Fund, has named Jane Lisa Mendillo as its new President and CEO. She will take charge on July 1st 2008, replacing Mohamed El-Erian, who quit in November 2007 to join Pacific Investment Management. The post is being held in the interim by Robert S. Kaplan, Baker Foundation Professor at the Harvard Business School.

Jane Mendillo has been the Chief Investment Officer at Wellesley College since February 2002, during which time the Wellesley Endowment has grown from $1 billion to $1.7 billion, with average annualized returns of 13.5%. She now returns to the Harvard Management Co, where she put in 14 years, from 1987 to 2002, in various positions before joining Wellesley in 2002. At Harvard, Mendillo was vice president for external management from 1998 to 2001, where she had investment responsibility for $7 billion in Harvard assets, including $6 billion in externally managed investments for the Harvard endowment, and $1 billion in Harvard pension and related accounts. Prior to that, she has served as VP for private equity and trusts, and before that as an equities analyst.

Aalong with the job at Wellesley, Mendillo has been a member of the boards of several investment groups, including the Yale Endowment's investment advisory committee, the Investment Fund for Foundations, and as a corporator of Emerson Hospital.. She is a Yale alum, with a masters degree from the Yale School of Management in 1984 and a BA in English, also from Yale, in 1980. In between her studies, she did a short stint as a manager in the office of investments at Yale University from 1980-1982, and as an equities analyst for Lord, Abbett, Inc., in New York in 1983. For a short period after that, she worked for Boston based Bain & Company as a management consultant from 1984-1987, after which she joined Harvard.

She recieved the 2007 Industry Leadership Award from 100 Women In Hedge Funds, a networking and philanthropic organization aimed at helping women in the financial industry. The award goes annually to someone whose “professional talent, ethics, and passion help define and advance the hedge fund industry’s standard of excellence.”

Jane Mendillo lives in Concord, MA with her husband, Ralph Earle III, and their two children, Elizabeth and Thomas.
